They live in tiny cracks and crevices in the bedroom, usually around the bed frame, and are about the width of a credit card.
While the bugs aren’t necessarily dangerous, they can be very annoying, and leave people with a bad reaction to their bites.
Having itchy, red bumps on the skin could be one of the earliest signs that you’ve been bitten.
Red bite marks on exposed areas of the skin could indicate that you have a bed bugs infestation.
The bites often appear in lines across the skin – as though the bug moves a bit before feeding, and then moving again.
Some of the bite bumps can develop into fluid-filled blisters in the most severe cases.
“Bed bug bites are painless, but some people experience a reaction to them,” said the NHS.
“This can occur from a few minutes after being bitten up to a week or two later.
“The bites usually fade in a few days. If they’re very itchy, you can buy a mild steroid cream [such as hydrocortisone] or antihistamine tablets to relieve the itch.”
There are other warning signs of bed bug infestations around you that you should be aware of.
Waking up with blood stains on your sheets or pillowcases could indicate a bed bug has been feeding during the night.
Similarly, look out for dark or rusty spots of bedbug faeces on the mattress, walls, or even on your pyjamas.
Some people have even described a musty smell in the room, which originates from the bugs’ scent glands.
If you suspect that you may have a bed bug infestation, the best thing to do is to remove all needing and check for signs of bug excrement.
You should also check the area around the bed, including inside books or around mobile phones, added medical website WebMD.
Bed bugs could also attack to clothing, so it’s a good idea to check the wardrobe for any signs of them.
If you do find signs of bed bugs, clean all bedding, curtains and clothes in hot water, and dry them on the highest setting.
Vacuum the bed and the surrounding area. After finishing, empty the contents of the vacuum into a plastic bag and take it straight out to the bin.
If you mattress is infested, it’s probably a good idea to just get rid of it and buy a new one.
